Vaastu was and is an integral part of Hindus since the Vedic ages. There is even mention of vaastu in our mythological books like Mahabharata and Puranas. The main entrance was always built in accordance to vaastu rules. The Northeast is considered the entrance as per vaastu. Its opposite direction i.e. the Southwest also has equal bearings on us. The southwest acts especially on the owner, the spouse and the eldest child. We shall discuss some vaastu rules for the Southwest.

1. We know by now that the northeast is the best direction for the main entrance. On the contrary, the Southwest is the worst direction for any kind of entry or main door. A main entrance at the South brings financial losses and problems for the owner. If an entrance at southwest is unavoidable, a vaastu expert must be consulted immediately for remedies.

2. It is extremely beneficial to have a vacant space at the Northeast so that maximum positive energy and early morning sunrays can come in. Conversely a vacant space at the Southwest is detrimental to the health of the members. Blocking the southwest is therefore good.

3. A water body in the form of underground tank, well, borewell, pond or lake in the Northeast is very good because it reflects polarised early morning sunlight into the house. But an underground water body at southwest is very bad. However, an overhead water tank at southwest amounts to the loading of the southwest and is very good.

4. While the Northeast is to be kept low and lighter, heavy items or constructions at the Southwest direction are very good as per vaastu. Heavy almirahs, furniture will also block negative energy from entering from the southwest.

5. A toilet is not desirable in the Southwest. If there is a toilet in the Southwest, its door should be kept closed and the toilet lid should be covered.

6. The Southwest corner should not be extended under any circumstances. If it is inevitable, then the help of copper wires, pyramids or yantras must be taken after consulting a vaastu expert.

7. If due to non-availability of underground water in any direction, a borewell has to be dug in the Southwest, it should be painted red and a Rahu yantra should be installed. Pyramids should be buried between the house and the borewell.

Benefits of a panchmukhi lamp (Diya)

An oil or ghee lamp is an integral part of religious procedures of the Hindus. It has been customary to worship gods and goddesses by lighting earthen lamps. While giving offerings at temples too the earthen lamp or diya is a common sight.

People also regard certain trees, rocks, ponds and rivers as incarnations of gods and offer oil lamps. Lighting an oil or ghee diya under the Tulsi plant in the morning and the evening is very auspicious.

The panchmukhi deepak or the five-faced lamp has special importance in vaastu. It is said that lighting a panchmukhi diya at home pleases the gods faster! There are certain benefits of the panchmukhi diya as explained in Indian astrology.

The panchmukhi diya should be lit on every Tuesday in front of Lord Hanuman. This removes negative energy and brings peace and harmony.

If possible, use only cow ghee to light the lamp. Burning of ghee produces positive energy and removes vaastu defects.

Lighting two panchmukhi diyas on both sides of the main door pleases goddess Lakshmi and brings in the riches.

Everyday, after taking bath put 7 tulsi leaves in a copper vessel with fresh water and chant "Aum namo Bhagabate Vaasudevaye namah" 11 times. Light the panchmukhi diya especially on Tuesdays.

Lighting the panchmukhi diya daily is very beneficial for those who are fighting old court cases. It brings victory. This also pleases Lord Karthick or Murugan who prevents bad effects such as ill luck, evil-eyes and nightmares. It also acts as a shield against evil spirits and curses.

A tip for ladies: - If you DO NOT want your riches to leave you, wear your jewelry in one place whether in standing or sitting position!

Benefits of an earthen pot

The earthen pots have been used in India since the Vedic era. Before invention of electricity, people used earthen pots to keep the drinking water cool. This process is followed till date especially in rural homes. They are called as "Desi Fridge" by many!! These are used to store grains and even cook food. Dishes cooked in earthen pots give an exotic flavour.

Vaastu regards earthen pots and utensils as very lucky. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides in earthen vessels. So keeping them in a clean and appropriate place is very important. Proper use of earthen pots is also desirable.

The North direction is ruled by Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber. It is very auspicious to keep an earthen pot filled with water in the North.

The planet mercury or Budh is the ruling planet at the North while the moon rules the Northwest. So an earthen pot filled with water at the North removes all ill effects of the moon and mercury. Make sure that the pot is not kept empty which may cause financial emptiness.

Lighting an oil lamp or camphor in the evening near an earthen pot improves the chances of progress or a raise at work. It promotes your career and business.

Caution: - The earthen vessel with water is associated with the water element. So it should NOT be kept near the burner or stove which represents the fire element. If done, there will be conflicts at home and burning of finances.

Mars or Mangal is a malefic planet and its ill effects can cause a lot of harm. The earthen pot can counter ill effects of Mangal. For this, one should drink water from an earthen vessel regularly. To ward off evil effects from Shani or Saturn, fill an earthen pot with water and keep it under a peepal tree on Saturday. This will make Saturn strong in your horoscope and remove its negative effects.
