SPOKANE, Wash.– The city of Spokane is one step closer to building a water tower on the South hill, as the Spokane Public Schools gave the city the go-ahead to build on its property.

However, not everyone is happy with this water tank project because it can disrupt conservation around Hamblen Park.

“This park has been always the heart of the home to me. I always walk the dog and take my grandkids,” said Peggy Keough, South Hill resident.

A long-time resident in South Hill thinks that the location is not quite fitting for the water tank.

“I had to be selfish and I know progress is necessary, and I know we need a spot, but I’m disappointed that they have chosen this spot,” Keough said.

The city of Spokane is planning to build a water tower between Hamblen Elementary and Hamblen Park.

Officials say the area of South Hill needs more water sources to ensure public safety. Particularly for the upcoming summer, the water tower will help increase system reliability that assures proper volume.

“We need fire flow if there’s an urban interface fire, if there’s structure fire that tank will help fire flow happen,” said Kirstin Davis, Communications manager for public works at the City of Spokane.

The city is also partnering with the school district, and Davis says the school staff is excited to see new learning opportunities for students.

“It really invites math and science and presentations our city workers can come in and explain a lot about water and why we need tanks,” Davis said.

The project still needs approval from the city council. So far, the city of Spokane says they don’t have a specific cost to build the tower due to the unpredictable cost.

However, the range will be between 5 and 10 million dollars.

If the project moves forward, construction would begin in the spring of 2023.
