BLUE EARTH– Members of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) attended the Faribault County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday to review activities by the department in the county.

“Our mission is to work with Minnesotans to conserve and manage the state’s natural resources, to provide outdoor recreational opportunities and to provide for commercial uses of natural resources in a way that creates a sustainable quality of life,” the director of the south region of the DNR, Scott Roemhildt, said.

DNR Clean Water Specialist Brooke Hacker spoke specifically on what the department has accomplished in Faribault County.

“One of the successes we would like to highlight is the on-going shallow lake management we are doing in Rice Lake,” Hacker commented. “This is working to improve the natural system in a row crop production landscape.”

Hacker also touted some of the fishing opportunities available in the county.

“The Blue Earth River and its tributaries are known for exceptional walleye and northern pike fishing,” she mentioned. “Walleye fry are stocked annually while channel catfish were stocked in 2021 and will be again in 2022. Bass Lake is a quality, stable fishing lake with a public access and a history of producing black crappie, bluegill, northern pike, largemouth bass, channel catfish and walleye.”

She concluded her comments by thanking Faribault County residents for their cooperation in working with the DNR.

“Partnerships and willingness for new approaches help meet multiple goals,” Hacker explained. “This county has been a leader with their ongoing efforts to incorporate water storage to help alleviate problems with ditches and rivers which are being pushed to capacity.”

–The board approved the fiscal 2021 emergency management grant agreement with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

–Approved a bid, in the amount of $7,300, by Ramsey Excavating Company for the removal of an underground courthouse fuel tank.
